October Workshop:
Brownesque Versals for Festive Engrossments
When: Saturday, October 24th. 9:30-11:30am PDT
Edwin L. Brown was one of the most beloved American engrosser’s of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His iconic style of engrossing is equal parts rustic, charming, and technical sophistication. It’s worthwhile for every student of Engrossing to be familiar with the tools and techniques he used in his famous works that populated the many penmanship journals of the past. In this workshop, we will design a single versal (initial letter) in the Brown style that can be used as a decorative element in a piece of traditional engrossing. The design (seen above) will be covered explicitly in the workshop, so some experience with watercolor, ink drawing, and general rendering will be helpful to attendees.
